During
the summer Kent County Council will be reviewing
one of the services it provides that affects
most of us on a daily basis - we call it Transport
Operations. Whether it is from fixing potholes
to building new roads or from road safety
education to installing more speed cameras,
we will be looking at key areas of the services
we provide to you to see how we can do better.
The service we are reviewing is called
'Transport Operations' and it affects you
because we:
- spend
£40 million maintaining 8400km of
road (including 3000 bridges, 110,000 streetlights,
512 traffic light sites, 2 tunnels )
- spend
£10 million improving and making safer
existing roads
- spend
£14 million building new roads
- spend
£4 million supporting bus routes that
are not financially viable for the commercial
bus companies.
- spend
£0.5 million delivering road safety
education to schools
- work
with planning authorities and developers
to manage the transport impacts and design
of new developments (shops, housing etc).
-
managing the 50,000 trenches made by utility
companies (e.g, gas, electric etc) each
year

The Government has set some rules
as to how we will review the services we provide
to you and these include:
- challenging
why and how the service is being provided
- comparing
performance with others
- embracing
fair competition as a means of securing efficient
and effective services
-
consulting with local taxpayers, customers
and the wider business community.

We
want to know your views about the service we provide. What do you like or don't like? For example;
-
can you get to work without falling down
a pothole?
- do
you think traffic speeds are too fast?
- do you know who to contact if you spot
a pothole?
- do we do enough to make our roads safer?
- do you always seem to get stuck in roadworks?
- would you like to use the bus but can't?
- do you get enough information about when
roadworks are going to start?

| These
are just some examples of questions to make
you think about the Transport issues that effect
you in Kent. Please help us to help you. We
want to listen to your concerns as well as about
the bits you really like. Please email us at
tmu@kent.gov.uk.
We will let you know how we are doing at regular
times during the year via this website and summarise
how we will be improving the service around
Christmas time.
